Casement windows (also called side-hung) are the most common window type and offer the best insulation performance. They open by rotating on side hinges, allowing 100% ventilation of the opening. They are the default choice when space is not restricted.

The casement window is the opening system with the best insulation-to-price ratio. When closed, the sash presses against the frame with perimeter weatherseals, creating an airtight closure superior to any other opening type.

5 or 6-chamber PVC profiles, combined with double or triple glazing, achieve thermal transmittance values (Uf) as low as 0.8 W/m²K — enough to meet the most demanding PassivHaus standards.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a casement PVC window cost?

A standard 1-sash casement PVC window (100x120cm) costs between €250 and €550 installed in Girona. With 2 sashes (150x120cm), from €450 to €950. Price varies by brand, glazing and finishes.

What is the difference between casement and tilt-and-turn?

Casement opens sideways on hinges. Tilt-and-turn adds a second position: it tilts inwards from the top for ventilation without fully opening. Tilt-and-turn costs about €30-50 more per sash.

Are casement PVC windows secure?

Yes. They have multi-point locking hardware that anchors the sash to the frame at multiple points. They can be complemented with lockable handles, child-safety restrictors and alarm sensors.

Is triple glazing worth it for casement windows?

It depends on the area. On the Costa Brava, low-emissivity double glazing is sufficient in most cases. Triple glazing is recommended for mountain areas (Olot, Garrotxa) or PassivHaus certifications.
