Grants for replacing windows in 2026: complete guide
Replacing your home's windows is one of the renovations with the highest energy and economic return. In addition to savings on heating and air conditioning, in 2026 there are several grant and subsidy lines that can significantly reduce the cost.
At Instal Tancaments we help our clients in Girona and the Costa Brava process these grants as part of our service. In this article we explain all available options and how to apply.
Next Generation EU funds for energy rehabilitation
The Next Generation EU funds are the main source of grants for residential energy rehabilitation in Spain. The programme is managed through the autonomous communities.
Main requirements
- The property must have been built before 2007
- The renovation must achieve a minimum 30% reduction in non-renewable primary energy consumption
- New windows must meet the thermal transmittance values of the current CTE
- An energy performance certificate before and after the renovation is required
Grant amounts
- Individual dwellings: up to €3,000 per dwelling (up to 40% of cost)
- Complete residential buildings: up to €6,300 per dwelling (up to 80% for economically vulnerable communities)
- Deadline: calls are renewed periodically — check the current status on the Generalitat website
Generalitat de Catalunya Plan Renova
The Pla Renova't is Catalonia's specific programme for window and enclosure renovation:
- Grants of up to €80/m² of replaced window
- Applicable to PVC and aluminium windows that improve thermal transmittance
- Compatible with other grants (Next Generation, income tax)
- Managed through ICAEN (Institut Català d'Energia)
Income tax deductions for energy improvement
- 20% deduction for works reducing heating and cooling demand by at least 7%
- 40% deduction for works reducing non-renewable primary energy consumption by at least 30%
- Maximum base: €5,000 per dwelling per year (20% deduction) or €7,500 (40% deduction)
Replacing old windows with high-efficiency PVC windows usually comfortably meets the 7% demand reduction requirement.
Practical example: how much can you save?
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Total cost of 6 PVC windows installed | €4,800 |
| Next Generation grant (40%) | -€1,920 |
| Plan Renova (€80/m² × 8 m²) | -€640 |
| Income tax deduction (20% of €4,800) | -€960 |
| Final cost for the owner | €1,280 |
This is an indicative example. Actual amounts depend on the current call and each dwelling's particular situation.

Frequently asked questions about window grants
Are grants compatible with each other?
Generally yes. You can combine Next Generation + Plan Renova + income tax deduction, as long as the total doesn't exceed 100% of the cost.
Can I apply if I've already replaced the windows?
It depends. For Next Generation and Plan Renova, you normally must apply before starting the works. The income tax deduction can be applied to works already carried out in the same tax year.
What type of window is needed for the grant?
Windows must meet the maximum thermal transmittance values of the CTE for your climate zone. In Girona (climate zone C), the maximum is Uw = 2.1 W/m²K. Passivhaus windows easily meet this requirement.
Does it only apply to windows or also shutters?
Grants cover the entire enclosure: window, shutter, shutter box and, in some cases, terrace enclosures.
