Who is Kömmerling and why is it a leading brand?

Kömmerling is a German PVC profile manufacturer with over 125 years of history, belonging to profine GmbH, one of Europe's largest PVC profile producers. Their profiles are manufactured in Pirmasens (Germany) and distributed in over 80 countries.

In Spain, Kömmerling is one of the most recognised brands alongside Veka. Their positioning is clear: mid-to-high range with a special emphasis on finishes and colour customisation. If Veka is the benchmark for volume and consistency, Kömmerling leads in aesthetic variety and premium finishes. In our comparison of the 6 best PVC window manufacturers we rank it among the top options on the market.

But before discussing the brand, there's something you need to understand: the profile brand is only part of the equation. The final quality of your window depends on three links: the profile manufacturer (Kömmerling), the fabricator who builds the window, and the installer who fits it in your home. We explain this in depth in our article on manufacturer, fabricator and installer, but the key point is: two "Kömmerling" windows can have completely different build qualities if made by different workshops. We work with one of the best Kömmerling fabricators in Spain, selected after over 25 years of experience watching how windows from dozens of different workshops age over time.

Kömmerling systems available in Spain: 70AD, 76AD and 76MD

Kömmerling offers three casement systems and four sliding systems in Spain:

Kömmerling Xtrem 70AD — entry to the Kömmerling range

  • Depth: 76 mm
  • Chambers: 5 insulation chambers
  • Gaskets: double EPDM gasket
  • Profile thermal transmittance (Uf): 1.3 W/m²K

The 70AD is Kömmerling's entry-level system. It's a reliable profile for projects where budget is a key factor but you want to maintain the quality of a premium brand. A good option for holiday homes or secondary rooms.

Kömmerling Xtrem 76AD — the most installed system

  • Depth: 76 mm
  • Chambers: 5 insulation chambers
  • Gaskets: double EPDM gasket
  • Profile thermal transmittance (Uf): 1.2 W/m²K
  • Maximum glazing: 44 mm
  • Profile class: A (≥ 2.8 mm per UNE-EN 12608-1)

This is the Kömmerling system we install most. The 76AD handles the vast majority of residential projects with confidence: renovations, standard new builds and homes seeking a good balance between insulation, aesthetics and price. The profile quality is evident when you handle it: thick walls, closed galvanised steel reinforcements and a smooth yet firm closure.

Kömmerling Xtrem 76MD — 6 chambers, triple gasket and PassivHaus certification

  • Depth: 76 mm
  • Chambers: 6 insulation chambers
  • Gaskets: triple central gasket + 4th additional gasket in the sash
  • Profile thermal transmittance (Uf): 1.0 W/m²K
  • Window transmittance (Uw): from 0.80 W/m²K (with triple glazing Ug 0.6)
  • PassivHaus certification: Yes, by PHI for warm-temperate climate (Spain)

The 76MD is Kömmerling's crown jewel in Spain. In just 76 mm of depth it achieves PassivHaus performance thanks to its 6 sealed chambers and an innovative design with a fourth gasket in the sash that reduces air movement in the glazing cavity. To achieve PassivHaus certification without sacrificing rigidity, Kömmerling chose to combine NEOPOR insulation fills with high-inertia galvanised steel reinforcements — maintaining airtightness and the ability to produce large-dimension enclosures.

This is the option we recommend for high energy-efficiency projects, passive houses and nearly zero-energy buildings (nZEB) in Spain.

Note: Kömmerling also has the 88 plus system certified PassivHaus for Germany's cold climate, but this system is not sold in Spain. The 76MD is the highest-performance system available in our market.

Kömmerling sliding doors: 4 systems for large openings

PremiDoor76 — sliding door with low threshold

76 mm sliding door ideal for terrace and garden access. Features a triple central gasket and low-threshold option for accessibility. Good performance-to-price ratio as an alternative to lift-and-slide.

PremiDoor76 Lux — maximum glass, minimum profile

A variant of PremiDoor76 with a fixed sash of reduced visible section. The result is a visually very light sliding door with a larger glass surface, but with the same technical performance as the standard version.

PremiLine — lift-and-slide

Kömmerling's benchmark lift-and-slide system. 84 mm depth, allows large glazed panels up to 6.5 metres wide. Stainless steel rails for smooth and silent sliding. We've installed PremiLine in several Costa Brava homes with sea views and the result is spectacular.

PremiSlide76 — parallel sliding with high watertightness

A system combining sliding and tilt-and-slide for high-quality movement. Based on the KÖMMERLING76 system, it maintains the triple perimeter sealing gasket. Unlike other systems, it can be recessed into the finished floor leaving a minimal step.

Full Cover and NaturKolor76 — the finish that makes the difference

If there's one thing that sets Kömmerling apart from other manufacturers, it's the Full Cover finish. While most brands laminate 1 or 2 sides of the profile (exterior and interior), Kömmerling covers all 3 visible sides, including the glazing bead — the edge visible when you open the window. Why does this matter? Because with conventional lamination, opening the sash reveals a strip of white PVC that breaks the finish's aesthetic. With Full Cover, that strip disappears. The entire profile is the same colour, whether the window is open or closed. We explain it in detail in our article on 3D Full Cover lamination.

The NaturKolor76 range offers 76 colours across 5 families: wood, premium wood, metal, solid and textured solid. Additionally, PX technology protects the colour with a 15-year guarantee — the most comprehensive in the industry. If you're interested in all finishes available on the market, we have a complete guide to PVC window colours and finishes.

It's a finish that impresses. Our clients who choose wood tones with Full Cover never tire of telling us that their neighbours ask them "what kind of wood are your windows made of?".

Kömmerling vs Veka — the comparison everyone asks for

It's the most frequent question: Kömmerling or Veka? Both are top-tier German brands, but they have different profiles (pun intended):

  • Finish variety: Kömmerling wins with 76 colours + 3-side Full Cover + 15-year guarantee. Veka offers ~50 colours + SPECTRAL ultra-matte, but without Full Cover.
  • Casement systems: Veka has Softline 70, 76 and 82. Kömmerling has 70AD, 76AD and 76MD. Both cover mid-range to PassivHaus.
  • Sliding doors: Both brands offer 4 systems. Veka: EKOSOL, VEKAMOTION 82, VEKAMOVE 76, VEKASLIDE HI-5. Kömmerling: PremiDoor76, PremiDoor76 Lux, PremiLine, PremiSlide76.
  • Smart home: Veka has TEXINO, its own home automation system. Kömmerling doesn't offer a proprietary system.
  • Price: Very similar. Both brands start at ~€350 for a basic window. The difference comes from the chosen system and finish.
  • Colour guarantee: Kömmerling 15 years (PX technology). Veka 10 years standard.

But here's something very few people consider and which, in our experience, is equally or more important than the profile brand: the fabricator. As we explain in our article on manufacturer, fabricator and installer, the same profile brand can deliver very different results depending on who builds the window. Weld quality, hardware, fine adjustment, reinforcements — all of this depends on the workshop that fabricates the window, not the profile brand.

Our opinion: For most residential renovations, both Kömmerling and Veka deliver excellent results — as long as the fabricator and installer are good. If you prioritise aesthetic finish, Kömmerling with Full Cover is hard to beat. If you want integrated smart home, Veka has TEXINO. But we insist: always ask who fabricates your window, not just what brand it is.

Real customer reviews of Kömmerling windows

After over 15 years installing Kömmerling windows on the Costa Brava and Girona, these are the most frequent opinions from our clients:

What customers value most

  • Spectacular Full Cover finish: The most commented feature, especially in wood tones. Clients who expected "an acceptable imitation" find a finish that looks like real wood. Several told us it was the deciding factor for choosing Kömmerling.
  • Notable sound insulation: Many clients tell us that "since we installed the new windows it feels like a different house". The leap from old aluminium windows without thermal break is enormous.
  • Solidity and perceived quality: The window closure is firm and smooth. Hardware fits precisely. It's a window that conveys quality from the very first moment.
  • 15-year colour guarantee: Long-term peace of mind, especially for south-facing facades with lots of sun. On the Costa Brava this matters a great deal.
  • profine technical support: For complex projects (special dimensions, bespoke technical solutions), Kömmerling's technical department responds quickly and competently.

What customers like least or worry about

  • Higher price than basic PVC: Kömmerling is not the cheapest option. Those seeking the lowest price will find alternatives like Cortizo for less — but with fewer features.
  • Less well-known to the general public: Veka has stronger brand recognition in Spain. Some clients arrive asking about Veka without knowing Kömmerling. When we show them the finishes, they usually change their mind.
  • Fabricator dependence: As with any PVC brand, final quality depends largely on the workshop that fabricates the window. This isn't exclusive to Kömmerling, but it's something the customer should know. More info here.

Who are Kömmerling windows for?

Kömmerling is the ideal choice if you value aesthetic finish as much as insulation. If you want your windows to look like wood without the maintenance of real wood, Kömmerling's Full Cover is, in our opinion, the best technology on the market to achieve it.

It's also an excellent option for high energy-efficiency projects: the 76MD Xtrem with PassivHaus certification for temperate climates is a technical benchmark in Spain. And for those seeking a solid, reliable mid-to-high range profile without complications, the 76AD is a proven system that has been delivering impeccable results for years.

Conclusion — is Kömmerling worth it?

Yes, as long as you choose well who fabricates and installs your window. Kömmerling is one of the best PVC profile brands we work with. Profile quality is excellent, Full Cover finishes are the most beautiful on the market, and the 76AD and 76MD systems cover everything from standard renovations to passive houses.

If you're considering PVC windows and your budget allows you to go beyond the basic range, Kömmerling deserves to be on your shortlist alongside Veka. At Instal Tancaments we work with both brands, select the best fabricators and carry out installation with our own team. We can advise you on which best fits your project on the Costa Brava and Girona.

Frequently asked questions about Kömmerling windows

Are Kömmerling windows good?

Yes. Kömmerling is one of the leading PVC brands in Europe. But remember: final quality also depends on the fabricator who builds the window and the installer. A Kömmerling window built by a good workshop and professionally installed is a top-tier product.

Kömmerling or Veka: which is better?

It depends on your priorities. Kömmerling excels in finishes (76 colours, 3-side Full Cover, 15-year guarantee). Veka excels in smart home (TEXINO). Both are excellent. But more important than the profile brand is who fabricates and installs the window.

How much do Kömmerling windows cost?

A standard Kömmerling 76AD window (100×120 cm) costs from €350 inc. VAT in white. With Full Cover finish, +25-35%. The 76MD PassivHaus starts at around €400 for the same size. A mid-to-high range window installed starts at around €600.

What is Kömmerling's Full Cover lamination?

It's a technology that covers all 3 visible sides of the profile (exterior, interior and glazing bead). When you open the window, you don't see white PVC anywhere. 76 colours available with a 15-year guarantee. We explain it in detail in this article.

Does Kömmerling have PassivHaus windows in Spain?

Yes. The Kömmerling Xtrem 76MD system is certified by the Passive House Institute for warm-temperate climates (Spain). It uses NEOPOR fills combined with steel reinforcements to achieve Uw from 0.80 W/m²K in just 76 mm of depth.

How important is the fabricator for a Kömmerling window?

Very. Kömmerling manufactures PVC profiles, but doesn't manufacture windows. The window is built by a workshop called a "fabricator" that cuts, welds, assembles and fits the hardware and glass. Two windows with the same Kömmerling profile can have very different qualities depending on who fabricates them. We explain it in detail in this article.
